ANBC - American Natural Bodybuilding Conference 1984-2004

Paul Jacobson

The ANBC was a drug free bodybuilding organization founded by Paul E. Jacobson in New York in 1984. The organization came about right after the demise of the Chet Yorton’s Natural Bodybuilder’s Association (NBA), and the Natural Body Builders of America (NBBA), two of the earliest natural federations. Jacobsen held an independent event in NY in 1983 prior to launching the ANBC in 1984.

Under Jacobson, a national title was established for the ANBC and was named the ANBC U.S. Natural. 1986 was the first year for the ANBC national championship. The title became prestigious and highly sought after for many years (Prior to 1986 the ANBC's top show was regarded as the Atlantic Supernatural).

(Note: 1986 ANBC U.S. Natural coverage appeared in the May 1987 edition of Iron Man magazine.)

Jacobson published a quarterly magazine titled Natural Bodybuilder. The first issue was released in October of 1985. The name of the publication changed to the ANBC Journal of Natural Bodybuilding starting in April 1987. The final issue of Jacobson’s publication was printed in the Summer of 1989.

Custom Medals Awarded at the ANBC U.S. Natural 1986-1989

A magazine titled ANB (American Natural Bodybuilder), published by Jed Given, existed from 1995-1996. It was an official publication of the ANBC. Two issues were printed (Summer 1995 and Winter 1996). There was also an eight page special section in Personal Performance Magazine labeled as Winter 1995, although it appears to have been a typographical error. It came out in the Winter of 1994.

Bob Gormley

Bob Gormley acquired the ANBC from Paul Jacobson in 1990. Up until that point, ANBC events were promoted as being 5 years drug-free with the stipulation that steroid use could never have accumulated to more than 12 weeks total over a lifetime. In 1991, Gormley initiated the lifetime drug free policy that the ANBC became known for.

The ANBC boasted as many as 47 contests in a calendar year spanning from coast to coast in the United States. In its peak, top athletes in the federation appeared in numerous issues of All Natural Muscular Development, the title Muscular Development magazine went by during its stint as a natural publication from February 1997 to February 1999.

The 2004 season was the final year of operation for the ANBC. Many of the ANBC promoters became part of the Organization of Competitive Bodybuilders (OCB) and fueled its growth.
